The harvest festival "Erntedankfest" is generally celebrated on the first Sunday in October, landing this year on Oct. 5. The centuries-old tradition has religious roots and is observed in both Catholic and Protestant churches in Germany. Elaborate decorations made out of seasonal produce, like the one pictured here, are often set up in the churches.
