Großansicht des Bildes mit der Bildunterschrift: Kurt Masur2008 marked the first time that all of Beethoven symphonies were performed in a single season in Bonn since the Beethoven Festival was re-established in 1999. If you’ve been a faithful listener over the past several weeks, you will have have heard them all – nearly. This hour, the conclusion of the cycle, with the 2nd, 3rd and 4th movements of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9.
Beethoven’s Ninth Symphony is a universal symbol for the power of music. Here, the composer deliberately stepped into history with a great ceremonial work that symbolizes freedom and unity. Ever since, performances of Beethoven’s Ninth have marked historic occasions, such as the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 that then led to the reunification of Germany. Indeed, Kurt Masur played a special role in the peaceful revolution that led to that historic moment. Before the performance you'll hear, recorded live in concert in September 2008, Masur was awarded the Furtwängler Prize in recognition of his lifelong achievements, among them being his status as one of today’s most renowned Beethoven interpreters.
