Robin Merrill

Having spent most of his life as a musician being interviewed by journalists, Robin Merrill finds it fascinating to stand on the other side of the microphone and interview the world’s top stars for DW-TV’s programme “euromaxx”.
Robin Merrill comes from Salisbury in southern England where he was a boy chorister in the Cathedral choir there. He also played the oboe and piano and won a music scholarship to Repton School near Derby at the age of 13. From there he went to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama in London to study singing. He left to be in the original cast of the musical “Evita” in London’s West End. After one year in the show he joined the Pasadena Roof Orchestra as their lead singer. He travelled the world with them playing in all the major concert halls over the next ten years singing hot swing music from the 1930’s and 1940’s.
It was whilst on tour with the PRO that he met his wife Karola in Berlin At his wedding in 1988 one of the guests told him that there was a job at the British Forces Broadcasting Service (BFBS radio) in Berlin. Having been interviewed countless times by journalists over the years, he had always been fascinated in working on the other side of the microphone. On New Years Eve 1988 he played his last concert with the PRO at the Savoy Hotel in London and the next day moved to Berlin to start a new career as a presenter and producer on the radio. Over the next five years he presented the breakfast show every day and interviewed some of the world’s top stars such as Elton John, David Bowie, Anthony Hopkins, and Dudley Moore, to name but a few.
When BFBS left Berlin in 1994 Robin decided to stay and joined DW TV presenting a weekly programme called “Regarding – the Story of the Week” for 5 years. It was also at this time that he started his own swing orchestra, the Savoy Dance Orchestra. Now when he’s not presenting “euromaxx” he’s happiest indulging his passion for swing music and also spending time with his wife and two children, Maximilian and Milena.
