A controversial power station in Tibet
The contradictions between the old traditional values and new, economic progress are apparent in many areas in Tibet.
China is trying to raise living standards and improve the economy in Tibet, in part to undercut the influence of the Dalai Lama. For example, Chinese officials have embarked on an ambitious plan to bring electricity to rural villages. As part of the plans, China built a controversial hydro electric power station on the Yamdrok Tso Lake. Critics say it damages the region’s delicate ecology. Reese Erlich was the first foreign reporter to visit the project when it was under construction in 1996 and recently returned to see how things have changed.
