Explosions in the Pipeline: making a bang to prevent accidents
In the summer of 2007, a gas pipeline exploded in the German state of Hessen. Fortunately, no-one was injured, but more than a year later, it is still unclear what caused the blast.
Werner Stadtmüller, a materials scientist at the University of Stuttgart is trying to find out exactly what happens when gas pipelines explode. Tomorrow Today visits him and his team in a bunker where they are working with oxyhydrogen, a highly explosive gas mixture. We watch as they blow apart a model pipeline and discover what they find when they pick up the pieces.
