UK No Longer in Pole-Position
Could the economic downturn lead to a mass exodus of migrant workers from the UK?
When the UK and Ireland flung their doors open to migrant workers from the new EU member states in 2004, up to one million Poles flooded the British Isles. But four years later the British economy is slowing down and expected to shrink further next year, with unemployment on the rise. All the while the Polish economy has gathered pace, not least owing to the money sent home by the migrant workers. This has turned the tide of Polish job migration. According to the latest statistics, an estimated 50 per cent of Poles working in the UK and Ireland have left the isles.
