Obamania in Berlin

The Democrat conender for the US presidency is arriving in Germany today as part of a seven-day tour of Europe and the Middle East. What sort of foreign policy can Germany and the EU expect if he does get elected? And the real thing or is he a phony?

Bildunterschrift: Großansicht des Bildes mit der Bildunterschrift:  Obama's visit caused a long debate about whether or not he should set out his foreign policy store in a speech in front of the Brandenburg Gate. Apparently his request even sparked off a major row within the government itself. In the end, he wasn't able to speak in front of the symbolic Berlin landmark but at the Victory Tower, which is a respectful distance from it, instead. Now interest has switched to what he's going to say instead of where he's going to say it. Some of the issues Obama wants to address: the role of the next US government in rebuilding the Atlantic Alliance; a "responsible" withdrawal of US forces from Iraq; and the reinforcment of western forces in Afghanistan. These are important topics, and Europe will be all ears.
